So far, I have been very impressed with the new Nike SQ Machspeed line of clubs. From driver to pitching wedge, the SQ Machspeeds over deliver in terms of playability, feel, and forgiveness. The SQ Machspeed Fairway Wood is a club I initially overlooked, but at a recent demo day, I gave it a second chance and boy, I am glad I did! For starters, this high MOI fairway wood sets up great at address. The face is not overly shut and the compact, square shape frames the ball perfectly. After a few bad swings, I was surprised a club this size could be this forgiving. Nike engineers were able to move the weight deep into the corners to give the club a high MOI and more stability at impact. Like the rest of the clubs in the Machspeed line, the SQ Machspeed fairway prides itself on it’s aerodynamic construction that moves air faster across the sole and over the crown for incremental swing speed advances. After a long range session with this club, I only have two minor issues with the performance. First, I think that the square head shape is perfect for the tee and fairway but I found the club to be a bit sluggish in the rough. Lastly, this fairway wood is so forgiving that I found it hard to shape shots to the right and left. This club only wants to go straight, which I’ll admit, is a good thing for 95% of the golfing market. If you are struggling with your fairway woods and want to try something new, I highly recommend giving the new Nike SQ Machspeed Fairway Wood a try!
