Lucas Glover, the winner of U.S. Open championship 2009, is among the top players committed to feature at the Buick Open in Michigan. According to organizers, former winners Tom Pernice Jr., Jim Furyk, Justin Leonard, Brad Faxon, Scott Verplank, and defending champion Kenny Perry will also compete. The Buick Open is slated to be held at Flint based Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club from July 27 to August 2.
Lucas Glover emerged an unlikely winner at U.S. Open in a rather anticlimactic finish. He remarked after his win, “I looked at the scoreboard to ensure this was really happening.” Over 24,000 golf fans, speckled with mud, could surely relate with his sentiments.
Glover did not concede the lead once over the final 12 holes. He closed with an assured 3-over 73 for a comfortable 2-shot victory. Desperate Phil Mickelson made another bid to win the Open, his last event before a long summer of deep uncertainty as his wife is battling breast cancer. However, Mickelson finished second, astonishingly for the fifth time in the prestigious American national championship. On the other hand, Lucas Glover, basking in the glory of his triumph, earned $1.35 million.
Some key highlights of his win are as follows:
- U.S. Open championship win was Lucas Glover’s second career win. The first one was in 2005 (Funai Classic event at Walt Disney World).
- He became only the second player in 25 years to triumph at a major in which he had failed to make the cut thus far. (Earlier instance was Lee Janzen, 1993 U.S. Open)
- He became the first qualifier since Michael Campbell (2005) to win U.S. Open.
It remains to be seen whether Lucas Glover can repeat the feat at the Buick Open.
