Jose Maria Olazabal insists that he has not been offered to become Ryder Cup captain for Celtic Manor in Wales in two years’ tenure. He admitted that Thomas Bjorn, who is the chairman of Europe’s players’ committee, did speak to him a couple of weeks ago, but the job was not offered to him. Olazabal has just come back after seven months after fighting rheumatism in his joints. He is in no hurry. He wants to play more golf but he wants to take it easy. Olazabal was chosen by Nick Faldo last May as an assistant for September’s match in Kentucky. But then came his long lay-off. Colin Montgomerie appears is a strong contender for the position when the match goes to Gleneagles in Scotland in 2014.
Sandy Lyle has already declared long time back that he was interested in being in charge at Celtic Manor. When probed he said that he did not have any information on Olazabal being offered the job but even if it was true he will not bother too much about it. He also said that 2010 would be his last chance, later than that he would be too old to play.
